Here's The Thing

If you hadn't noticed, h3lx posted in the forum recently. He made this observation:

/PS contest have really fallen off to the wayside as of late, whats up wit dat?

//use to be a good contest three to five times a week, now we're lucky to get a good one in a month... photoshop me disappointed...

I didn't see anybody respond or counter even. I think the topic of the day was dogs, so it may have just been overlooked. But here's the thing: He is absolutely right.

Unequivocally so, in fact.

How did things get this way anyhow? It's only fark of course, but it's still kind of a downer.

If you don't know already, h3lx is one of the old skool fark 'shoppers. So he knows of what he speaks. Since I agree with his conclusion, I obviously also know of what I speak, LOL!

Really, if you're new to the forum (as many are) you should to check his stats. You might also at least try to be aware that going off topic chases away the very people you could stand to learn something from. To be fair, a lot of the fault in this lies with the mods/whatever the hell is up with fark lately. "When the cat's away...".

But I should get back to where I was going. The contests have fallen by the wayside because lately the greenlighted 'O's have been awful. Yes, yes, yes. "A decent 'shopper can do something with the crappiest of 'O's". True. But look at who's choosing to post entries in the recent or upcoming contests. If there's no incentive to put time into an 'O' you get what you get.

I won't name names because that's just stupid. It could be anyone really, it wouldn't matter. I kinda have to surmise that people look at the entry first and maybe have a look at the name. So it's not a matter of personalities, but one of effort.

What's the good news? The decent entries are still winning. And this is all just a cyclical thing anyhow.

You'll see.

First of all, welcome back. It's nice to hear an informed opinion once and a while.

Yes, I saw the PSAEF post. I wanted to say something to the effect of THIS, but didn't want to start a huge flamewar. I think it's a sore subject for a lot of us. I know it is for me.

h3lx had a point. Even if he was speaking rhetorically, his questions deserve an answer. Something is "up" with Fark lately. The admins seem to be trying, but lack a fundemental understanding of voting patterns. I think they should reserve the theme contests (and good Os) live times to peak hours. No more letting a good contest go live at 3am on a saturday. Let the jumping dogs and shack pictures go live after 6PM and on weekends/holidays. I don't want to be like TSZ, and cherry pick my contests based on when they go live. But it's hard not to. Vote addiction is a harsh mistress.

That being said, here's my quick solution for a "reward" system for good contests. It's tied to link voting. Make it so that the subby's username glows green (or red) based on the number of positive link votes his submitted PS contest gets. Just a quick thought.

For those of us who Ps as a time filler, I really think that the "O" s have been rather meh in general. As a liter, I'm shopping when the sucker goes live and I happen to know it's there. If a cursory glance at the "O" doesn't tickle my fancy, I'm moving on to foobies, I mean Geek and Showbiz links.
The over abundance of election elated posts etc ain't helping much either.
Don't forget, I'm Switzerland!!
